Scandal or Disappointment? – Polish Comments on the Case of the British Phone Hacking Scandal
Monika Worsowicz
The case of the tabloid “News of the World” from July 2011 was widely reported and evaluated in Poland. Commentators referred to the problem of the relationship between politics and the media. They estimated that Polish tabloids are not strong enough to actually influence on political life, and that the British event will encourage representatives of the government to be more cautious in their relations with the media. They expressed fears of increasing the crisis of journalistic integrity and the outcome of the overwhelming “pursuit of the news”. Less interest was aroused by the strictly moral aspect of the events associated with the victims of wiretapping. The scandal, which seems to have threatened the most precious values, in the Polish media gained the status of events rather disturbing and compelling than scandalous.
