"Aneks" - post-March émigré quarterly
Mikołaj Tyrchan
English version of the article
The "Aneks" quarterly was one of the most important Polish émigré magazines post 1945. It was published in the 1970s and 1980s by a group of post-March émigré journalists headed by Aleksander Smolar. The article aims to delineate a synthetic description of the magazine's genesis and its ideological development which resulted in its post-revisionist stance through open support of Western anti-totalitarian ideas and Polish democratic opposition, affirmation of the "Solidarity" movement and the beginnings of "independent society" in Poland after 1981. A characteristic trait of "Aneks" diversified journalism was a skilful combination of political issues with discussion on history, anthropology, philosophy or religious issues. After 1989, "Aneks" leading journalists became key national journalists shaping political discourse in post-Communist independent Poland.
