"Zeszyty Historyczne"- reviews of Polish publications (1962 - 1989)
Mikołaj Tyrchan
Historians who had conducted scientific research before 1989 were subjected to incessant ideological pressure. Official historiography was based on the Marxist model and desirable patterns of behaviour were derived from Soviet experiences. Despite all these difficulties many historians tried to retain independence and objectivity in their research work. This article focuses on the reviews of writings in official and illegal circulation published before 1989 which were systematically discussed in Jerzy Giedroyc's "Zeszyty Historyczne", one of the most important emigration periodicals dedicated to the newest history of Poland. It represents emigration historians' ambivalent attitudes to different research stances presented by representatives of humanistic studies in Poland.
