Environmental Discourse on the Onet.pl Web Portal

The aim of the paper is to show the impact of environmental discourse on the central discourse field ('news' area of the media discourse treated as a 'sphere of consensus' in which the contents presented are generally accepted in particular cultures and uncontroversial). The material analyzed comes from news bulletins published on the Onet.pl web portal. The research is comprised of two parts: a quantitative analysis of the number of news items related to environmental issues and published between July 9th and August 5th, 2007 and an analysis of the genre which prevailed in such news items and is frequently referred to as fait-diverse. A particular focus was put on the analysis of the cognitive aspect of the genre as it allows to reconstruct the way in which the reality is projected in media, which in turn affects particular beliefs, discourse attitudes and language behaviour of the general public.
