The beginnings of Polish press. From Gallus Anonymous to Jan Aleksander Gorczyn

The author presents the beginnings of the press in Poland, discussing also earlier initiatives which resulted in the publishing, in early January 1661, of “Merkuriusz Polski”. He focuses on the life, artistic work and activity of Jan Aleksander Gorczyn and Łukasz Opaliński who provided patronage for the initiative of publishing “Merkuriusz”. After the periodical’s closing, Polish press did not become popular until 1729.
