Foreign capital and the content of the Polish media (1989–2002)

Tomasz Mielczarek

Foreign capital presence in the Polish media can not be limited to the problem of property rights. A representative of that capital through different way tries to influence mass media content. Their aim is to deliver entertainment and to avoid any possible conflicts with state authorities. As long their media are profitable they are not interested in the content. Being not satisfied in economic terms they are able to undertake drastic interventions, including personal decision. Quite different situation is in the electronic media. Limitations for the foreign owners results in delimitation of their influence on the media content. However in that case it is well visible tendency to the globalization of the offered content. However it is expected that in the nearest future Polish media will be to a growing extent dominated by foreign capital, it is hope, that they survive with their local specify. Specialized government agencies and public media should protect interests of the national culture.
