Elements of Self-Presentation in the News Reports in Polish Daily Newspapers
Krzysztof Kaszewski
Self-presentation is one of the main features of contemporary media communication. The article presents the results of an analysis of news texts of the four Polish dailies (“Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”, “Gazeta Wyborcza”, “Nasz Dziennik” and “Polska The Times”) from the years 2008–2012 in terms of self-presentation elements. The main aim of the research was to present: what rhetorical devices are used by the papers when they write about themselves; what roles and features do they try to attribute themselves; in what places (sentences, texts, papers) do these elements appear. Research proved that self-presentation elements are common and highly exposed in news features. Dailies mostly wrote about themselves using their abbreviated title, less commonly by means of pronouns (us, ours) and verbs in the 1st person plural; they usually suggested, that they are active, curious, effective, determined, trustworthy and caring for others.
