Day after day… The May coup described in Lodz dailies published in Polish

Miłosz Hrycek

Lodz in the 1920s was a key Polish press centre. An imperative element of the press system then were dailies published in Polish language. The article analyses the reports and initial assessments of the May 1926 coup as presented by the Lodz dailies. Despite forecasts that there may be a military coup, the May events were a shock to the public opinion. Lodz residents were also astonished. Lodz journalists did their best in order to accurately present the events in Warsaw and around Poland. Later on, they analysed the reasons for Pilsudski’s actions and attempted to foresee the near future.
