Occasional Translation. A Review of Translations from Early Occasional Polish Press

Ewa Gruszczyńska

This article is a systematic review of preserved translations from the oldest Polish press between 1514.1729. The presented materials indicate a wide range of languages from and to which articles were translated. The most popular were Polish and German, followed by Latin, Swedish, Italian, French, Czech, English, Spanish, Danish and Dutch. This article analyses those translations in which Polish was one of languages to or from which the texts were translated. The main point of interest was the comparison between the source text and the target text. From the preliminary analysis it can be concluded that the strategy of early press translations was in between a direct and loose interpretation.
