From Private to Public – on the Beginnings of Radio Broadcasting in Greece

The article presents the history of Greek radio broadcasting, from experimental beginnings at the brink of the 20th century, to the mid 1950’s, when the radio market gained relative stability. Discussed are the important moments in the history of Greece and their impact, at times long-term, on the situation of radio broadcasting, and diverse problems (legal, organizational etc.), with which the radio in Greece had to then deal with. Additionally, the relations between the state apparatus and broadcasting institutions has been presented, which enabled revealing the origin of political parallelism, gradually taking on the elements of the Mediterranean media model. The role of private broadcasting initiatives in the complex process of developing the Greek radio have also been discussed.
