Public service television was of the most important element of european media and culture tradition over some decades. At the begining of the 1960s almost all television transmission was by terrestrial broadcasting and limited to a small number of public service channels, This changed dramatically over last twenty years. New technologies and new politics introduced commercial stations, The public service lost their monopoly and faced compętition, deregulation and globalization , The emerging information society has been introduced the ideological shift in favour of market forces in media system, The walfer state, with its national boundries has increasingly confronted with ecońomic actor like transnational corporations, Digital technology and technological convergence madę public service media situation in Europę morę complicated and put them to transition. The future of european public service media system depends on its ability to challenge the digital era and on European Union social and audiovisual policy.
